Honky Tonk Angels...Maysville, KY

Later today I will be heading back to Maysville, Kentucky to start the last four days of performance of the musical comedy, THE HONKY TONK ANGELS at the historic Washington Opra House. All four shows last week were performed to sell out crowds and we expect the same this week. It is an honor and pleasure to be playing steel and dobro in this talented cast of musicians and singers. I also just finished the construction of my new D8 console steel to use with the shows (see my discussion and…See More

My New Console Steel

After 105 hours of design and construction my new steel is a playable instrument and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. It has huge round tones and the harmonics leap off of it. I re-used the Usa Sperzel tuners, the George L's E-66 pups and the fretboards from my old Deeks D8. The fretboards are temps until I cane buile the curley maple ones for this guitar. I have been hoarding the two upper pieces of maple for more than 20 years and a so glad they are on this project. I went with a…See More

"Both reasons.  I like having the full 6 note minor chord and I like the low D note.  I often use the low D note with harmonics to give a nice contrast."

Sure can rout from the back but surface mounting the pickup I have to raise all the hardware to get the strings to coil distance correct. I want to keep everything as close to the body and fretboard as possible so I might have to rout the pickup frame into the top instead of surface mounting. I'll come up with something to save all that nice curl. I don't even want to put a fretboard if I don't have to. Maybe just markings silk screened on the body.

Great tune. Hope we get to play again soon. Your "S6 Jet Fighter" is underway in the shop. What ideas did you have for the tuners? I love all the curly maple and hate to cover any of it up but I'm gonna have to rout some pockets in it for electronics and install a fretboard.
