Just to let you know,..I am not a STEEL player yet.....but those are the principles I will be employing....former accordian player,...that's how I learned....
Just another thing,...learn you songs 1 note at a time,...play the melody line by itself,...over and over,...then when you add the thirds and fifths or whatever you will see how they relate to the chords,...Learn the melody line and add the rest later,..that is the "song". The rest is just dressing for the melody line,...Loose the melody line in the song,...and then it's just jamming,..or jazz,....or whatever you want to call it.... It's my opinion,...but it did work for me.....
Don't know if you got my earlier post,...the best way to understand steel best is to understand music theory ....scales and chords,...The steel is set-up for chords and scales,...Original hawaiian steel with no pedals was going from chord to chords,...Most music is just busted up chords and scales,...so study those chords and scales,...learn them on every level of the scale of your neck,..play them over and over and over and over,...and did I say it,...over and over. When you start to apply these to the songs that you learn and your tabs,...you will "SEE" the chords and scales right there in front of you....Might be boring at first,...but it all relates. Best tip I can give you...learn piano or get a good piano chord book....it will show you how these chords relate....know any good piano players....??
David Hartley has a ton of videos that are well put together on YOUTUBE. Watch,..repeat,...watch,..repeat,..watch,...repeat. My accordian teacher made me learn every kind of scale there was, diatonic, chromatic, butyoucan'tplaythatwith tenfingers scales. The page was black with ink...but it worked,...I couldn't play some of that stuff,...but I did get to 90%,...I only needed 45% to make my living from music and be a real HOT accordian player...SAME APPLIES FOR THE STEEL,...
